It's true, in 1999 both houses of the Federal Government proclaimed May as National Military Appreciation Month, this pre-dates the attacks of September 11, 2001. May was chosen because VE Day, Military Spouse Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day are all contained in the same calendar month.
Help the USO of Northern Ohio say thank you to the troops. We are trying to collect a $1.00 donation from 300,000 grateful members of the American public to help underwrite the costs of the summer picnic and winter holiday parties of each military unit in the northern Ohio area we serve. That's $300,000 in one month. The more funds we raise, the more FUN they have and all money raised stays in northern Ohio.
Technically, we are collecting the money during National Military Appreciation Month, but showing that appreciation throughout the year. I don't think the military personnel or their families will mind the delay.
How can you help beyond just donating?
If you own or work at a restaurant or retail location, make that spot a donation location through the end of May. The more donation locations we have in our 29 county area, the more funds we can raise.
If you work at an office or manufacturing plant, you can coordinate with your place of employment to get one of our "Bucket of Bucks" and pass it around to all of the employees (check your employers solicitation policies), then ask your employer to match the employees donations dollar for dollar.
Some organizations have Cornhole Tournaments, BBQs or Hot Dog sales, Poker Runs, or other similar fundraising events and make the local Military troopers the beneficiaries through the USO of Northern Ohio. Don't hesitate to call out office to get helpful ideas from our staff, 216-265-3680
